Captain of the Cheering Squad

I know I go on and on about fall and all things autumnal, but someone has to be on its cheering squad.  Winter, heck it’s got all sorts of holidays,  snow and sledding and school closures. Spring has a group of gardeners that hoot and holler for new tulips and budding lilac bushes and then there’s Summer.  Summer has pretty much everything going for it, sun, swimming, camping, star gazing and don’t forget it gets more time than any other season with its long days and short nights.   

So, I have taken it upon myself to elect myself as the Captain of the Cheering Squad for Autumn (or Fall if you prefer, but you weren’t at the organizing meeting, so I selected Autumn as it sounds more refined.  However, I have realized upon that decision that there aren’t many words that rhyme with Autumn so cheers may be difficult.)

I spent the better part of the weekend outside at a soccer game with our youngest (Dad was on baseball duty with our oldest) and in the mountains fishing.  The weather couldn’t have been better had you ordered it from Sam Champion.  The sun was shining, the birds were chirping, the crispness in the air was so inviting and comfortable and yet, the cheers weren’t as loud as I would like.

People kept saying how they miss the heat of summer and how they’re looking forward to a snow day and those gardeners, oh my the gardeners.  They have already placed their orders for next spring’s bulbs and vines. 

Perhaps this week, I will get out my rust and gold colored cheerleading sweater and my amber pom poms and begin my cheers early in the morning and encourage all of autumn’s adoring fans who are a bit shy to step out of their summer comfort zones and encourage them to trim back the leftover tulip and iris stalks and stock up on purple mums and all things pumpkin and scarecrow like.  It’s time to be loud and support our glorious autumn.

Three cheers for leaves changing gold.

Red and orange and all of them bold.

With our might we’ll cheer you on

And bring home a victory for Autumn.
